The making of the Mediterranean Stole

April 21st, 2020

In 2007 I had big plans. I would knit the Mediterranean stole published in A Gathering of Lace and designed by Maureen Egan Emlet. But with much less knitting experience than now and the perseverance like a pack of custard, I was fed up after I made the back and only one side. It was becoming very beautiful, so the whole was neatly bind off and saved for who knows what. In a box, which then disappeared, until it surfaced during the Corona cleaning and tidying rage. A gem that deserved to be finished.

It was no small feat, even now, because the edge of roughly fifty rows with almost 1600 stitches per row, on needles 1.5 mm, is a big thing. But I have loads of time now and it was definitely worth it to finish it. If I ever make plans for a project as big as this one,… please stop me!

Hiiumaa Kindad

April 8th, 2020

Books open your eyes to the world that is closed to us in the time of corona. It was of course disappointing that my trip with my friends to Estonia had to be postponed, but there will be better times and in the meantime I order some nice books to cheer me up. Saara Publisher House has been committed to preserving and archiving handicrafts and traditions in Estonia for years, resulting in an impressive row of beautiful craft books, which are sold all over the world. The series Estonian Knitting, from which part III will be released in future, is seen as a standard work in the knitting world. Anu Pink plays an important role in this process. She also wrote Hiiumaa Kindad with the help of Sirje Juurikas.

Hiiumaa Kindad is exclusively about traditional knitting on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa. The beautifully published hardcover book is filled with patterns and knitting patterns from the island of Hiimaa, west of Estonia. The mittens and gloves from the island’s museums were studied and painstakingly knitted to be converted into usable patterns. Much is also explained about the specific features of knitting from this part of Estonia, which is often different from what I have seen elsewhere in Estonia. Mittens with extra side space decorated with motifs that differ from the rest of the mitten, red felt straps on the hem, fringes on flaring cuffs and variations on the Bosnian crochet stitch. There is a lot of variation in motifs, from small to slightly larger, but also plain gloves and wrist warmers with stripe motifs. Some motifs can also be seen elsewhere in the Baltic region, such as small stars, diamonds and diamonds with crosses in the center. The funny fly from nearby Saaremaa is also present.

Although the book is written in Estonian, is is very usable, because all essential techniques are accompanied by photos, the patterns are great for an average knitter and the photos, well, you just have to enjoy them. And no, I don’t speak Estonian now, but I recognize many (craft) words and otherwise there is always Google Translate.

SamplerM

April 6th, 2020

How it all started……
On June 17, 2006 my husband Jan bought me a beautiful old cotton knitting sampler and a small sock for me at an antique market in Delft.
The knitwear was probably made by a schoolgirl or handicraft teacher for the handicraft lesson in the early twentieth century. The cotton has proven to be very strong and everything is still flawless and clean. The delicate, unbleached cotton resembles Durable’s unbleached knitting cotton, which is still available in handicraft shops, and the thin needles (1 or 1.25 mm) can be ordered via the internet.

There was a knitted initial or initials in both knits, but which one? Only when it was clear that the one on the stitch patch is upside down in connection with the mouse tooth that was started and that comes back into the sock, did it become clear that the letter M is knitted into both knitwear, hence the name I gave the project: “SamplerM”.

Intrigued by the handsome knitwear, I started to knit and tried to reproduce all 28 patterns of the stitches, which need quite some research! Believe me, you do not want to know how often I have had to rip pieces because it was just not right. Sometimes I came across stitches that I actually knew were wrong, or at least less beautiful. But in order to preserve the authenticity of the stitch, those stitches have also been replicated as well as possible.

In this way I try to support the preservation of knitting art from the beginning of the last century. So much knowledge and skills have been lost over the years. I like to share all this with the help of the internet with other knitters, after all, this is how the intricacies of the old handicraft are preserved. From 2006 until the beginning of 2020 the patterns were available for free via the Yahoo group SamplerM, but after Yahoo had deleted the files, I merged everything into one large pattern that can be obtained for a few euros via the site of The Dutch Knitters or Ravelry.

I myself, in my attempt to make an exactly similar stitch patch with the same material as was used for the original, knitted with the fine Durable cotton No. 12, but of course the stitch patch can also be made in a more contemporary way in thicker yarn. Or build a bridge between past and present and use a trendy tan!

The patterns of the SamplerM are collected in a 62-page PDF booklet that you can print yourself. The booklet is available through Ravelry or The Dutch Knitters.

Motten – moths

December 31st, 2019

Soorten motten

Was kleding regelmatig.
    • Laurierblaadjes
    • Kruidnagels

Types of moths

  • The brown house moth is common in the Netherlands. You can recognize brown house moths by their brown wings with black dots. The larvae are beige in color and have a red-brown head. They eat seeds and grain, but also paper, wool, linen, leather and dead insects. They love warmth and are most common in the summer. The moth pulverises into brownish dust when you slap them.
  • The moth has light brown, almost gold colored wings. They can become one cm long. The larvae are white and have a brown head. Clothes moths are not found in the wild, but in homes. The larvae eat wool, cotton, linen, silk, hair, leather and feathers. They cannot live on wool alone. They do not eat synthetic fabrics. It also happens that, in the absence of better food, they eat food residues on clothing or throw themselves on dead insects. Clothes moths and their larvae mainly occur in the summer months.

How do you know if there are moths in your house?

  • You see small holes in your woolen, linen or silk clothing or in fur or stuffed animals.
  • You will find small white eggs and white larvae in your clothing.
  • Your clothing is discolored or smells musty.
  • You can see all kinds of thin spins in your closet or on your clothes. They are made by the larvae that have crawled out of the garments to pupate.
  • Moths fly out of the wardrobe or you can see them sitting against the back wall.

What can you keep out moths / kill?

  • All (second-hand) clothes, yarns, comforters and fur that you bring into the house first go into the freezer for a few nights to kill moths and eggs.
  • Is it freezing outside at night? Then put all woolen fabrics in plastic bags or boxes for a few nights or days on the balcony or in the garden.
  • Let your clothes air in the sun every now and then, but bring everything back in for the evening to prevent moths from outside to get into your textiles.
  • Moths can survive a wash below 48 degrees C., so wash clothing at higher temperatures if the fabric can withstand it. Dry cleaning also kills moths and eggs.
  • Moths like dirty clothes that smell of sweat and skin fat. Wash clothing regularly.
  • At the end of the winter season you remove all woolen items from the cupboard, shake well, give the cupboard soapy water, vacuum clean and, if necessary, wash clothes again.
  • Moths are more font of old houses than on newly build houses. Make sure you close all cracks. Houses in cities seem to suffer more from moths, possibly because they are being built closer together. High humidity, warmth and dark spaces attract moths.
  • Keep your precious woolen items in sealed plastic boxes and / or sealed plastic bags, eg ziplocks. Place old newspapers under and on the stacks of textiles. Don’t stuff the wardrobes too full.
  • Fold sweaters and cardigans so that the back piece will be on the outside, then the chance is bigger that the moth holes will be at the back if a moth comes along, which you might prefere to having them at the front.
  • Seal all food packages (flour, grain, seeds, etc.) well.
  • Vacuum well (also in the corners and under and in cupboards!) This removed moths and moth eggs.
  • Use the hair dryer on the hottest setting to remove cracks, larvae and eggs from cracks and other awkward places.
  • Place screens in the open windows.
  • Bluebottles and flies are a sign that there may be a moth infestation. Look at what they are heading for, clean it up and then be aware of moths invastations.
  • Desperate? Then spray the whole house well with a spray of poison against flying insects, eg Roxasect. Do that just before you go away for a day or before you go on vacation.
  • Place moth traps (box with glue layer and fragrances that attract moths), these also give a picture of the number of moths living in the house. Or purchase an execution lamp (lamp that attracts moths, after which they are electrocuted. Be careful with old mothballs, because they can contain toxic substances that are unhealthy for humans and animals. Modern mothballs also smell bad!
  • And if it really gets too furry, call in pest control!
  • Moth holes can often be repaired invisible (or visible as decoration). Or let De Afstap in Amsterdam do it.
  • There are many scents that keep moths away:
    • Lavender
    • Cedar wood (lightly sand after a year and add extra cedar wood oil)
    • Soaps with strong scents
    • Essential oils
    • Newspaper (moths hate the smell of the ink)
    • Bay leaves
    • Cloves

Happy 2020!

A month in Tallinn

December 9th, 2019
My Kihnu socks with Magic Motif ‘Kihnu’

It is pure bliss that we can spend the entire winter month November in Estonia. Much more special than in the summer, when tourists flood the city and the country like any other tourist attraction. I prefer the tranquility and more intimate nature of November. Our wonderfully spacious apartment on the Vabaduse Väljak (freedom square) on the 6th floor in the building of the Kunstihoone (Art Academy) had a magnificent view of the city, church towers, the Russian church in the upper city, ancient city walls and towers and even the sea in the distance. The ideal base for my adventures in Tallinn and trips to Haapsalu, Helsinki and Tartu. And around the corner from the opera, what more do you want?

Magic Motifs in Haapsalu lace

I had a quiet first week, I went to two openings of exhibitions (carpets from Mariann Kallas and The Weather Diaries ), a cat show with Monika and a concert. Then Mardilat started. This is the feast of Sint Maarten, the name saint of my father, which is celebrated with a cozy handicraft fair in the Saku Suurhall, among other events. It was already my fifth time at the fair, but I still enjoy it to the full, I love the nice atmosphere and all the workshops, and you always buy something. But I will tell about that later on,….
We were allowed to make some stars for world’s biggest himmeli (straw artwork). Jan and I were also allowed to be present at the conference of the Northern European handicraft organization. Very interesting and nice to meet like-minded textile lovers from all over Northern Europe. Thanks to Liis and Liina of the Estonian Craft Union!

Jan started painting an icon, this time a very special one, because Sylvia Kristel , the famous Dutch actress, who doesn’t know her, … was depicted as Mary Magdalene . Several Magic Motifs are hidden in the image. Painting an icon is many hours of work, so Jan is still working on the icon on weekends.

Class Magic Motifs

I was allowed to do something myself too, during the 3D festival organised by the Estonian Craft Union I gave a class on Magic Motifs for some very enthusiastic participants who are now also hooked on the Motifs.

I have focused on connecting my Magic Motifs with Estonian knitting techniques. For example, I processed motifs in Roositud (embroidery in combination with knitwear), Haapsalu lace and the traditional socks and stockings from Kihnu. At the moment, part of my work is still under embargo in connection with possible later publication, but you can find a preview here.

We went to Helsinki and the ERM in Tartu (visit to the museum and knitwear research), opera, concerts, tango, Alice in Wonderland, the National Library, Haapsalu, the Open Air museum, the city museum and the Design museum, we maked jewellery at the workshop of goldsmith Allar and of course also we enjoyed the Christmas market. In the opera I spotted so many beautiful Haapsalu shawls and in the ERM I saw the oldest piece of Estonian knitwear. I celebrated 10 years Lace Center with the knitters (including Linda Elgas!) in Haapsalu and contributed a crochet star for the Christmas tree. Mist, storm, sun and a little bit of snow. Smoked fish, Muhu bread, chocolate fudge, Vana Tallinn, glühwein and lots of pies, it is a miracle that I didnt gain any weight… We have worked and foremost enjoyed the Estonian culture.
I have done and experienced a lot, but in the end, I can also knit at home on my own couch. The power of being in a different culture and get new inspiration you do by traveling and gaining experiences, on the spot, where you can smell the smoky Estonian scents, experience the culture and meet the people of the country.

Tallinn in November

October 28th, 2019

In November will I live and work as Artist in Residence in Tallinn, Estonia. I will research how the principles of Magic Motifs can be applied to all kinds of traditional Estonian techniques. And of course enjoy the Estonian culture, ballet, concerts and operas, Muhu bread, cakes from Pierre, Vana Tallinn, Monika’s jam and the company of my Estonian friends.

I am lucky, because in November there is the Mardilaat handicraft fair, an international knitting conference, the 3D event where I shall give a presentation and workshop and a Christmas market on Raekoja square, where they brew the tastiest mulled wine with nuts. Well, my apartment is very close to it… Jan will come for a few weeks to paint icons, nice!

Fair Isle Designs from Shetland Knitters Volume 2

October 1st, 2019

A few days ago a beautiful book fell on my doorstep: Fair Isle Designs from Shetland Knitters Volume 2 of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers . Volume 1 was a great success, so many were looking forward to the second part. Again full of designs that exude the authentic Shetland knitwear, but are adapted to contemporary taste, wearing comfort and knitting technology. Sweaters, socks, hats, hair bands, shawls, neck warmers, a pillow and mittens. The mittens were designed by Brita Hövenmark, the Swedish lady who can often be found in the textile museum in the summer. Just like me, she loves Twijnend Knitting.

In the introduction of the book also a piece about the history of knitting in Shetland and a chapter with answers from the designers to all kinds of questions. In short, compliments to the Shetland knitters and an asset to your knitting bookcase! The book can be ordered at the Shetland Times bookshop in Lerwick.

The epic journey Estonia/Latvia

May 17th, 2019

Laptop case – Magic Motif SCALLOWAY

Jan and I certainly did not spill any time during our stay in Shetland. The winter lends itself well to cozy work in the Booth, especially when the days are very short in December and the waves hit the windows during a storm. We would like to show part of our work to you …

Shetland – Up Helly Aa Lerwick

February 11th, 2019

Town hall Lerwick during Up Helly Aa 2019

The two months in Shetland were an unforgettable experience. In the last week we enjoyed Up Helly Aa in Lerwick. About 1000 Shetlanders in Viking outfits or other costumes moved past us with burning torches that were then thrown into the galley to ritually burn it. We felt the warmth, experienced the smells of burning oil, wood and textile and experienced a sensational fun evening with our dear friends Nicky and Tony, thanks to knitting friend Nancy who got us tickets for the hall. Before that I had already taken a dance class to learn how to dance traditional Scottish dances in Shetland style, so we could dance too.

Of course, Jan and I have not only entertained us with the many festive activities in December and January. Jan painted no less than five icons and I designed a collection knitwear on the basis of Magical Motifs and other secret language. More about that in the next blog …

When I said goodbye to the Booth and said goodbye to good friends, I blinked away some tears. The last night we stayed in the Sumburgh hotel so we had to be a little less early. And to our surprise, Nicky, Tony, Wendy, Andrew and Kaylee Ann came to the hotel to say goodbye. A cosy ending to a great stay on our beloved Shetland!

January in Shetland

Also in Shetland one switches to normal everyday life in January. After all those festivities, that was nice too. But that peace did not last long, because Scalloway opened the Up Helly Aa season with the Fire Festival. This is actually the first Up Helly Aa of the season. It also has a squad of Vikings with a tough jarl that leads the festivities. In the morning the galley was towed to the waterfront where you could admire it all day. I got chatting with one of the boat builders and even had the opportunity to see where the galleys were built in their boat building. The plates from the previous years hung on all walls. On a plate is reported who is jarl (head Viking) this time, the name of the galley and which Scalloway inhabitants have been misbehaving last year. They use a simple code language to hide an extra message in the text, which of course I find very interesting as the author of Magic Motifs. It is not difficult to read, the red text is the second message. At the end of the afternoon I was by chance in the Cornerstone (cafe on the corner at the end of the street where I live) when the guizers ate, drank and dollied up for the parade. Wonderful moments, because then you have really nice conversations with the guizers and the jarl and you can have your picture with them taken. The best moments of the day for me. The parade started and the galley was burned in the water of the ocean right before my eyes. But then the party started,… I got a ticket for the Public Hall near the Booth in the center of Scalloway. What an experience, … a big carnival. Girls wearing mini skirts that look more like broad belts and I wondered if some of them had forgotten to put on their skirts. Wild Scottish dances, silly performances and a separate room with tasty snacks, as much as you could eat. I stayed until around midnight, but then left for my bed in the Booth.

And after all this celebrations, it still is wonderful here. The pace and dynamics of life are at a low level here. It changes you in some way. Especially if you are here for a longer time, this more relaxed pace creeps under your skin and you experience how life is led here. A real life experience for me. In the morning you first see what kind of weather it becomes before you make your plan for the day. Storm, snow, slippery, or a blissful sun, all weather conditions change quickly here, so you can also adjust your plan during the course of the day. My little house is cozy, warm and has a beautiful view over the bay and the ocean. On only 10 minutes walk from my house you can walk along the shore. A group of Shetland ponies lives there in the wild, but they love company and even a cuddle. The seal is seen a few times every day and the seagulls hunt for starfish at low tide. The town is quiet, but comfortable and you can buy fresh fish that comes straight from the boats. So I try everything, sometimes fish of which I do not even know the name, but everything becomes delicious when I just fry it in olive oil, pepper and salt. Even scallops are delicious with a bit of aioli, they have become my favorite fast food. Every Thursday I join the knitting group in the Scalloway museum. I will miss that especially when I am back home, I already know that. You do not understand the real Shetlanders half the time, but the accent is so nice to hear, and who knits together, knits a band.

Another week to go. On Sunday Jan arrives again for the grand finale, Up Helly Aa in Lerwick. Knitting friend Nancy got hold of tickets for one of the halls and gave me instructions on what to expect. Here it comes down to: there is food in abundance, wear a festive outfit, you may also have to roll up your sleeves to help with the chores and bring your ow alcohol, because it is a school, so there is no bar. The day before, Lerwick is already turned upside down and the next day everyone is asleep as the party goes on till 8 AM next morning. An official Lerwick holiday, pretty much everything is closed and there are not even buses. Shetland’ ers, it is certainly a nice, friendly population, who are in for a party to get through the winter and with a really great sense of humor. And for someone who comes from a much busier world, it is wonderful to experience how small news can be big news in a small-scale society. Who has seen the Humpty Dumpty teapot that was stolen from a house in Sumburgh last week?
